Getting Involved

Greetings from the MS in Applied Data Science program! We are excited to introduce the following two opportunities that will enable you, our current students, to play an active role in taking our program to the next level:

Student Advisory Board (SAB) & Ambassador Program

Student Advisory Board (SAB)

The Student Advisory Board (SAB) serves as a bridge between current students and the program administration. Your role as a member of the SAB will involve:

  • Sharing Valuable Feedback: Provide valuable feedback, suggestions, and ideas from a student perspective to help us continuously improve the program. Your input will directly influence the enhancements in our program, ensuring it remains aligned with the aspirations and needs of our students.
  • Building Community and Your Network: Participate in recruitment, career, and social events on behalf of the program. In addition, you will be able to connect with your peers, faculty/instructors, administrators, fostering relationships that extend beyond your academic tenure.
  • Cultivate a Positive Legacy: Create a lasting imprint on the program, leaving it even better for future generations of students. SAB members will be featured on the current student website.

SAB members must commit to the following:

  • Attending all three SAB meetings per academic year. All meetings will allow for hybrid participation (in-person and online). The meetings have been scheduled on the following dates:
    • Autumn Meeting: Wednesday, October 18, 2023
    • Winter Meeting: Wednesday, January 24, 2024
    • Spring Meeting: Wednesday, April 10, 2024
  • Participate in three program sponsored events (e.g., recruitment, career, and/or social events).

The Ambassador Program

The Ambassador Program offers current students the opportunity to support the recruitment efforts of future students interested in joining the MS in Applied Data Science program community. Throughout the course of the academic year, current students affiliated with the Ambassador program will be sent requests for participation at various program sponsored events (e.g., career, social, etc.). Volunteer as your time permits. You will need to represent the program in at least one program sponsored event to receive access to any perks.

Benefits

We would love to have your perspective and leadership through one of our volunteer opportunities. As a token of our appreciation for your contributions, here’s a glimpse of the exclusive perks awaiting you:

  • Exclusive access to a networking event for volunteers
  • Complimentary gift from the program at graduation
  • Priority access to program updates

How You Can Get Involved

If you are interested in being considered, please complete the Getting Involved with MS in Applied Data Science Interest Form. For those interested in the SAB, you must also submit a 2–3-minute video or a one-page essay telling us why you would be an asset to the board and share any ideas you have for enhancing the student experience. All video submissions should be uploaded here.

Applications for the both the SAB and Ambassador program will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis. If opportunities become available for you to get involved with either one, you will be contacted. If you have any additional questions or concerns. Please do not hesitate to reach out to Dr. DuJuan Smith, Director of Student Affairs, at dusmith@uchicago.edu.
