Non MS-ADS Student Enrollment
University of Chicago graduate students in good academic standing may request to take MS in Applied Data Science courses as long as they meet the course prerequisites and space is available. Please note that MS in Applied Data Science students have priority registration for all program coursework. MS in Applied Data Science course capacity is limited, and we will serve graduate students from external programs seeking enrollment into one of our courses on a first come, first served basis.
Please note that permission to enroll in MS in Applied Data Science courses is at the discretion of the program regardless of academic status. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to the MS in Applied Data Science Advising Team.

Please note:
- Access to the Non MS-ADS Student Enrollment Requests Form is restricted to students at the University of Chicago. Please ensure that you are logged into your UChicago Google account when accessing the form. - The Non MS-ADS Student Enrollment Request Form will only be open during the published dates. Please review “Quarterly Request Deadlines” for more information.
- No exceptions will be made to the request deadline (November 30).
Registration Process
- Students are responsible for assuring that their home program of study approves of their taking coursework in the MS in Applied Data Science program.
- Once approved, students should submit a request to enroll to the MS in Applied Data Science Advising team through the Non MS-ADS Student Enrollment Requests Form. Please do not reach out to any MS in Applied Data Science Instructor seeking permission for course enrollment. Course requests are only considered through submission of our form.
- Requests must include unofficial transcripts, course syllabi, and/or other material that demonstrates prior coursework and knowledge that meets any course prerequisites. For a complete list of MS in Applied Data Science courses and prerequisites, please visit MS-ADS In-Person Program website.
- Students will receive notice of permission, if granted, before the start of the requested quarter. Student must coordinate course enrollment with their home program of study.
Quarterly Request Deadlines

Course Restrictions
Non MS-ADS Students are only able to request enrollment in courses listed on the published request form. For more information on courses and the planned course schedule, please visit: https://applieddatascience.psd.uchicago.edu/academics/curriculum/.
The following are not available for Non MS-ADS students:
- Zero credit workshops and courses (i.e, ADSP 37021: Python for Data Science & ADSP 37026: MS-ADS Career Seminar)
- ADSP 31016: Leadership and Consulting in Data Science
- MS in Applied Data Science Capstone courses
- Any remote/online course offerings
Additional Policy Information for Graduate Student at Large Students (GSAL)
- If a GSAL student applies and gains admittance to the MS in Applied Data Science program, up to two courses may be transferred.
- ADSP 31014: Statistical Models for Data Science (Required Core Course)
- One ADSP Elective (e.g., ADSP 32007: Data Visualization Techniques, etc.)
- Please note that all course transfers are at the discretion of the program. Because the MS in Applied Data Science program requirements are subject to change, not all courses taken as a GSAL student may be eligible for course transfer.
- To maintain F-1 and J-1 status, federal immigration regulations require that students be enrolled full- time for all quarters listed on the I-20/DS-2020, except for the vacation quarter (usually summer). For GSAL students, ‘full time’ means three classes (300 units) each quarter.

How do I enroll in a MS in Applied Data Science course?

I submitted my application, when will I hear back?
We begin reviewing the application the week after the deadline, so you will hear back one week after the deadline.
What happens if a course I requested closes before you review my application?
We will offer you the option to enroll in an open section of the course, if possible. If no other section of the course is available, then you will have to reapply the next time the course is offered.
Can I be added to a wait list for a MS in Applied Data Science course?
We do not maintain a wait list for students in an external program.
Can I enroll in a course if I receive instructor permission?
Course enrollment will not be granted based on receiving instructor permission. Students are not to reach out to any MS in Applied Data Science Instructor seeking permission for course enrollment. Please note that enrollment is only considered for students who submit the Non MS-ADS Student Enrollment Requests Form.
Can I audit or take a MS in Applied Data Science course as pass/fail?
Students are expected to maintain good academic standing while enrolled in MS in Applied Data Science courses. Students must earn a grade of B- or better in any approved course. MS in Applied Data Science courses are not available for audit and/or Pass/Fail grading to External Program students.
My.UChicago.edu shows seats are available in my preferred course. Why am I not enrolled?
Seats listed as available in my.uchicago.edu do not reflect actual seats available for a course.
Where can I find a list of courses that will be offered this quarter/academic year?
The live course offerings available for registration each quarter are published as the Schedule of Classes, with information such as class meeting dates, times, locations, instructors, and more. Students can only request enrollment for courses and sections listed on the Non MS-ADS Student Enrollment Requests Form.
